What is llms.txt?
- llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website, at /llms.txt, that tells large language models what the site is and lists its most important pages with short descriptions. It is a proposed convention, similar in spirit to robots.txt, adopted by a growing number of sites and documentation platforms.
Does llms.txt help SEO?
- It is not a ranking factor and Google has said it does not use it. It is a low-cost signal for AI systems that do read it, and a useful discipline: writing one forces you to say what the site is for and which pages matter. Treat it as a small, cheap win, not a strategy.
Where do I upload it?
- At the root of your domain so it resolves at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On most platforms that means the same folder as robots.txt. Serve it as text/plain or text/markdown.
What if I do not have a sitemap?
- Switch to the paste mode and enter one URL per line. If you have no sitemap at all, that is the more urgent fix; our audit tool will flag it.
