ChatGPT SEO: How ChatGPT Picks Sources and How to Be One
What ChatGPT reads before it answers, how its search retrieval works, which pages it cites, and a practical checklist for getting your business recommended.

ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your website cited when ChatGPT answers a question with web search. ChatGPT retrieves a small set of pages through its search layer, reads them, and writes an answer with citations. To be one of those pages you need to be crawlable by OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, rank for the queries ChatGPT rewrites your question into, answer directly and specifically, and be corroborated by other sources ChatGPT trusts.
How ChatGPT answers a question
When search is on, ChatGPT follows a pipeline that is worth understanding in detail:
- It rewrites the user's question into one or more search queries.
- It sends those queries to its search index and retrieves candidate pages.
- It reads the candidates, usually a handful, and selects passages that answer the question.
- It writes the answer and attaches citations to the pages it used.
Two OpenAI crawlers are involved. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT search results. GPTBot crawls for model training and some retrieval. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT to open a specific link. All three respect robots.txt.
When search is off, ChatGPT answers from training data. Those answers are shaped by what was widely published about your brand up to the training cutoff, which is why consistent mentions over time matter as much as any single page.
Step 1: make sure ChatGPT can read you
Check robots.txt for these three lines, or their absence:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
A Disallow: / for any of them removes you from that path. Many sites blocked GPTBot in 2023 to keep content out of training data and did not realise the same block affects visibility. If you want to be recommended, allow at least OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User.
Then confirm your content is in the raw HTML. ChatGPT's crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If a page shows a blank shell without scripts, it is invisible. The free audit checks both.
Step 2: rank for the rewritten queries
ChatGPT retrieves through search, so ranking still gates everything. The rewritten queries tend to be shorter and more generic than the original question: "best CRM for a three-lawyer firm" becomes "best CRM for law firms". Pages that rank for those head terms are the candidates.
Practical implication: your core service and comparison pages need to rank for the plain version of the question, not only for long-tail variants.
Step 3: write passages ChatGPT can lift
ChatGPT prefers passages that are direct, specific and self-contained:
- Answer first. The opening paragraph of a page or section should answer the question in two or three sentences.
- Name things. "We install TPO, EPDM and standing-seam metal roofs" is citable. "We install a wide range of roofing systems" is not.
- Give numbers. Prices, timelines, quantities, dates. ChatGPT quotes figures readily and attributes them.
- Use comparison tables. When a question is "X versus Y", a table with the same rows for each option is often lifted almost verbatim.
- Keep sections self-contained. A passage that depends on the previous section for context is harder to use.
- Add a short FAQ. Real customer questions with two or three sentence answers give ChatGPT a clean passage per question.
Step 4: be corroborated
ChatGPT is cautious about recommendations. Before naming a business, it tends to look for agreement across sources: review platforms, industry publications, comparison articles and community threads. A brand that appears consistently across those, with the same name and description, is recommended with confidence. A brand that exists only on its own website is not.
The work here is a mention programme aimed at the sources ChatGPT cites for your topic. Run your prompts, list the cited domains, and get included there: comparison and "best of" articles first, then expert quotes, reviews and community answers. Our GEO guide covers the method.
Step 5: keep your entity consistent
Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your profiles. Use the same business name, description, address and phone everywhere. ChatGPT is checking that the entity it is about to recommend is real, specific and stable.
Step 6: measure
Build a prompt set of 20 to 40 buying questions, run them in ChatGPT with search on every week, and record whether you are cited and who is cited instead. The AI Visibility Checker does a quick version. Watch the trend, not a single run; ChatGPT's answers vary by phrasing and by day.
What does not work
- Keyword stuffing. ChatGPT reads for meaning and skips unnatural text.
- Generated filler. Pages without real specifics are not cited.
- Blocking crawlers while expecting recommendations. You cannot be cited by a system that cannot read you.
- One big page for everything. ChatGPT wants a clear answer to a specific question. Separate pages for separate questions, each direct.
- Fake reviews or mentions. Corroboration works because it is hard to fake; inconsistent or manufactured signals read as risk.
Frequently asked questions
How does ChatGPT choose which websites to cite?
With search on, ChatGPT rewrites the question into search queries, retrieves candidate pages from its index, reads them, and selects passages that answer directly and agree with other trusted sources. Pages must be crawlable by OAI-SearchBot, rank for the rewritten queries, and be specific enough to quote.
Should I allow GPTBot in robots.txt?
If you want ChatGPT to recommend you, allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User at minimum. Allowing GPTBot as well covers training and retrieval. Blocking all three makes you invisible to ChatGPT.
Can ChatGPT recommend a local business?
Yes. Ask it for the best provider of a service in a city and it names businesses, drawing on Business Profile data, reviews, directories and local pages. Consistent listings and reviews that mention specific services help.
How often should I check ChatGPT visibility?
Weekly, against a fixed prompt set. Answers change quickly, so a trend over several weeks is meaningful and a single check is only a snapshot.
